Open d'Italia 2003

(articolo tratto da The National Croquet Calendar, Settembre-Ottobre 2003)

For the first time an Italian player, Edoardo Lualdi, won the Italian Golf Croquet Championships.

In a sunny and very hot Sunday afternoon, Edoardo beat in three games Gianpietro Donati in an unexpected all-Italian final. The two Egyptian women, Mona Hegazi and Iman El Faransawi, who were considered the pretenders to the title, had to be content with third and fourth places.

The two lawns at the Cascina del Lupo sporting center in Busto Arsizio were in perfect conditions, and the weather was fine, maybe just a little bit too hot for the non-Egyptian players.
On Saturday some good golf croquet was seen during the qualifying blocks in which each of the four players played against the others, but everyone kept their best for the playoffs.

On Saturday evening, the first eight players had already given up their chances to win, but htey could forget their bad luck with a delicious gala dinner.
On Sunday morning, the quarterfinals showed some brilliant golf croquet, and the semifinals were a hard battle between Italy and Egypt, which ended with the victories of the Italian players.

The Busto Arsizio city council helped the Italian Federation in hosting the event, and the councillor for sport and leisure, Mrs. Ruffinelli attended the prize-giving ceremony.
Winner Edoardo Lualdi and runner-up Gianpietro Donati decided to donate their prize money, Euro 600 and Euro 250 respectively, to the Italian Croquet Federation, in order to help the Federation's effort to promote croquet throughout Italy.

USCA President Dick Brackett presented the Italian Croquet Federation with a plaque express gratitude for the hospitality and to emphasize the friendship between the USCA and the Italian Croquet Federation.
